Company Overview
Nanosolar’s mission is to reinvent the design and manufacturing of photovoltaics to create the lowest cost solar cell and panel. The holy grail of solar cost and capital efficiency is to deposit a thin film of a semiconductor using a printing process—far faster than conventional high-vacuum deposition—and to create an efficient, durable solar cell.
Nanosolar has accomplished this by leveraging recent advances in nanoscience and by creating novel forms of nanoparticles dispersed into a proprietary ink formulation. The result is the ability to utilize equipment from the printing industry to produce solar-electric foil at very high speeds, bringing the economics of printing to the world of semiconductor manufacturing. Applying the latest in robotics—primarily from the automotive industry—and even reinventing lamination tooling enables Nanosolar to assemble cells into panels with high throughput and the highest quality.
Nanonsolar has reportedly raised more than $420 million from Larry Page/Sergey Brin, EDF Energies Nouvelles, AES Solar, Riverstone Holdings, Energy Capital Partners, the Carlyle Group, Lone Pine Capital, the Skoll Foundation, GLG Partners, and Beck Energy.
