Company Overview
Mahalo is a human powered search engine founded by Jason Calacanis who previously founded Weblogs Inc. and served as a senior vice president of AOL. Unlike Google’s algorithmic search results, Mahalo presents search engine results pages that have been manually created by “profile builders”. While this process leads to slower coverage of all search terms, Mahalo’s search results pages should be richer and more useful than search engine results pages presented from an algorithmic search. Mahalo attracted more than 2.4 million unique users after just 6 months.
Mahalo Answers, launched in December 2008, is a question and answer message board with a twist. When posting a question, a user can offer a “tip” for the best answer. By offering an incentive to the person answering the question, the question is likely to be answered more correctly and in a more timely manner. Mahalo keeps a percentage of the “tip” amount.
Mahalo has received a reported $21 million in funding from Sequioa Capital, News Corp, Mark Cuban, Elon Musk, and others.
